CLAT Preparation 2027: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide

A complete CLAT preparation plan — section-wise strategy for English, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, Current Affairs and Quantitative Techniques, plus a month-by-month timeline for the NLUs.

CLAT is the single entrance test for admission to twenty four National Law Universities. It is a comprehension driven paper, which means the student who reads well and reasons carefully will always beat the student who memorises the most.

Understand what CLAT actually tests

Every section of CLAT is passage based. You are given the information you need and are tested on how well you use it.

  • English Language with comprehension, inference and vocabulary in context
  • Current Affairs including General Knowledge, tested through news based passages
  • Legal Reasoning where principles are supplied and applied to given facts
  • Logical Reasoning covering arguments, assumptions and conclusions
  • Quantitative Techniques based on simple maths applied to data sets

Make reading the foundation of your prep

  • Read a national daily every day and note the legal and policy stories
  • Follow one monthly current affairs compilation instead of many scattered sources
  • Practise reading long passages without re reading every sentence
  • Build vocabulary from your reading, not from memorised lists

Master legal reasoning the right way

  • Never use outside legal knowledge; apply only the principle given in the passage
  • Break each principle into its conditions and check the facts against each one
  • Practise contract, tort and criminal law style passages regularly
  • Write down why a wrong option was tempting so the pattern does not repeat

Logical reasoning and quantitative techniques

  • Identify the conclusion of an argument before looking at the options
  • Practise assumption, strengthen and weaken question types separately
  • For quant, revise percentages, ratios, averages, and data interpretation
  • Aim for accuracy over attempts; negative marking punishes guesswork

Practise like the real test

  • One full length mock a week from month three, moving to two a week in the final month
  • Sectional tests twice a week for the weakest area
  • Analyse every mock in detail and maintain a running error log
  • Track section wise time so no single passage eats your paper

A month-by-month timeline

  • Months one and two: reading habit, English foundation, legal reasoning basics
  • Months three and four: weekly mocks, logical reasoning depth, current affairs revision
  • Month five: sectional drills, error log revision, speed work
  • Month six: two mocks a week, static GK revision and full syllabus recap

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating current affairs as rote learning instead of understanding the story
  • Using prior legal knowledge in legal reasoning questions
  • Skipping mock analysis because the score looked acceptable
  • Leaving quantitative techniques untouched until the last month
