IPMAT Preparation 2027: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide

A practical IPMAT preparation plan for Class 11 and 12 students — syllabus breakdown, quant and verbal strategy, mock test routine and a month-by-month timeline for IIM Indore and IIM Rohtak.

IPMAT is the shortest route into an IIM straight after Class 12. IIM Indore, IIM Rohtak, IIM Jammu and IIM Bodh Gaya together offer only a few hundred seats, so the exam rewards speed, accuracy and steady practice far more than long unfocused study hours.

Understand what IPMAT actually tests

IPMAT is an aptitude paper, not a board-style syllabus paper. Three abilities decide your score.

  • Quantitative Ability with short answer questions where there are no options to fall back on
  • Quantitative Ability with multiple choice questions that reward elimination and speed
  • Verbal Ability covering reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary and para jumbles

IIM Rohtak adds a Logical Reasoning section, so a candidate targeting both institutes must prepare reasoning alongside quant and verbal.

Build the quant base first

  • Master arithmetic completely: percentages, ratios, averages, time and work, time speed distance
  • Move to algebra: quadratic equations, inequalities, logarithms, functions and progressions
  • Cover modern maths: permutations and combinations, probability, set theory and matrices
  • Practise short answer questions daily because a careless calculation costs the full mark

Strengthen verbal every single day

  • Read one long editorial or feature article every day and summarise it in three lines
  • Learn twenty words a week in context rather than from isolated word lists
  • Revise the core grammar rules: subject verb agreement, tenses, modifiers and parallelism
  • Attempt two reading comprehension passages a day under a strict timer

Practise like the real test

  • Take one full length mock every week from month three onward
  • Take two sectional tests every week to fix the weaker area
  • Spend twice as long analysing a mock as you spent writing it
  • Track accuracy, attempts and time per question rather than only the raw score

A month-by-month timeline

  • Months one and two: build the quant base and start daily reading
  • Months three and four: begin weekly mocks, cover modern maths and reasoning
  • Month five: sectional tests, error log revision and speed drills
  • Month six: full length mocks twice a week and revision of formulae and vocabulary

Prepare for the interview round early

IIM Indore shortlists on the written score and then calls candidates for a personal interview. Track current affairs, be clear about why you want management education at eighteen, and be ready to talk about your school subjects with depth.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Ignoring the short answer section until the last two months
  • Practising only easy questions because they feel productive
  • Writing mocks without maintaining an error log
  • Preparing for IPMAT and boards in isolation instead of aligning the two schedules
